What Is a 501(c)(3)

What Is a 501(c)(3) and How OLVPF Serves Our Parish & School Families

501(c)(3) is a federally recognized nonprofit organization created for charitable purposes. Donations are tax-deductible, and the organization is required to operate with transparency, accountability, and financial oversight. This structure is commonly used by Catholic parishes and schools to support their mission through organized, responsible giving.

The Our Lady of the Visitation Parishioner Fund (OLVPF) is a parishioner-led 501(c)(3) created to strengthen the mission and ministries of Our Lady of the Visitation Parish and School. OLVPF does not replace parish offertory or school tuition, and it does not own or manage parish property. Instead, it serves as a complementary resource, allowing families, alumni, and community supporters to contribute toward parish- and school-identified needs through collaborative and faithful stewardship.

OLVPF operates in alignment with Canon Law, Archdiocesan guidelines, and long-standing Catholic charitable practices, while fully respecting the pastor’s leadership and parish governance. This model reflects well-established parish support foundations used throughout the Catholic Church to help sustain parish life and Catholic education.

How OLVPF Aligns With Canon Law

  • Canon 1254 §2 – Purpose of Temporal Goods (Supports the Church’s mission)
Canon Law encourages the use of charitable resources to support worship, education, ministries, and service to others.
  • Canon 1257 §§1–2 – Ownership of Ecclesiastical Goods (Respects parish ownership)
All parish buildings, property, and assets remain fully under parish ownership; OLVPF provides financial support only.
  • Canon 1284 – Duties of Administrators (Honors the pastor’s role)
The pastor remains responsible for parish operations and finances; OLVPF supports parish priorities without interfering in administration.
  • Canon 216 – Apostolic Initiative of the Laity (Encourages parishioner involvement)
Canon Law affirms that parishioners may organize charitable efforts in unity with the Church to support parish life.
  • Canon 222 – Duty of the Faithful (Helps families support the Church)
Organized charitable giving allows the faithful to contribute responsibly and intentionally to the needs of their parish and school.
  • Canons 1265–1266 – Regulation of Collections (Clearly separates fundraising)
OLVPF fundraises as an independent nonprofit and does not conduct or represent parish collections.

Together, these principles affirm that parishioners may form a charitable organization to support their parish and school when done transparently, independently, and in cooperation with parish and Archdiocesan leadership.
